Sometimes carnivore dieting advice means well–but here are five pieces of advice we can rethink.

If you’ve been around the carnivore community for a while, you’ve likely heard some dieting advice. But is it always helpful? Today, let’s rethink five carnivore diet sayings that, while well-meaning, may need some tweaking to keep us on the path to success. Rethinking this advice can help you achieve long-term carnivore success while making the journey a bit smoother.

First up, the phrase “Keep Carnivore simple.” While simplicity is important, sometimes oversimplifying can leave us undernourished or confused about what our bodies need. Yes, eating mostly meat is straightforward, but you also need to pay attention to your hunger cues, fasting insulin, and body responses.

Next, “Don’t eat that, because it’s not Carnivore.” While language and labels have their place, it’s always more important to me for a person to determine what foods or activities actually serve their body and improve their health more than I care about “Is it Carnivore.” I only eat animal products, because of how other foods effect my own body, and not because of my desire to stick to a certainly diet or label.

Another phrase to reconsider is “People with excess body fat shouldn’t eat fatty meats.” This is misleading. Fat is crucial for satiety and hormone health. For many, eating enough fat helps regulate hunger and supports healing—two keys to sustainable weight loss.

Now, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result.” While it is rather “insane” to keep repeating the same painful or harmful behaviors while expecting different results, consider the definition of “consistency.” When we’re consistently doing the things that we KNOW are good for our bodies, we may not immediately get the “different results” that we were hoping for, but we keep doing them anyway. That’s not insane at all! That’s consistency, and over much time that consistency leads to amazing results, which isn’t insane at all!

Finally, “Calories don’t matter.” Well, they do, but it’s not as simple as a number. The type of calories and how your body processes them matters even more!
