If you or someone you love struggles with digestive inflammation, this conversation will make you think.
In this week’s episode of My Zero Carb Life, I talk with Dr. Jocelyn Foran, a Canadian anesthesiologist who spent years battling ulcerative colitis while practicing medicine. After trying the standard advice—more fiber, plant-based eating, and lifelong medication—she found herself ready to have her colon removed. Instead, she tried removing plants. What happened next changed the trajectory of her health—and her perspective as a physician.
When the Expert Becomes the Patient
Dr. Foran did everything “right.”
She followed her specialists’ advice. She took the prescriptions. She even shifted toward vegetarian and then vegan eating because she was told it might help.
It didn’t.
Her symptoms worsened. Long operating room shifts became stressful because she never knew when she’d urgently need a bathroom. By her early 40s, the disease was running her life.
When she finally tried a lower-carb approach, she saw improvement within weeks. That led her step-by-step to eliminating plants entirely.
She’s now nearly three years plant-free—and symptom-free.
Why Removing Fiber Helped
One of the most powerful parts of our conversation was her analogy: adding fiber to an inflamed colon is like scrubbing a sunburn with sandpaper.
For her body, even “healthy” plant foods were irritating an already damaged system. When she removed them, inflammation calmed. Digestion stabilized. Medications became unnecessary.
She also began prioritizing fatty cuts of meat, quality sleep, time outdoors, and stress management—simple foundations that often get overlooked in modern medicine.
Rethinking Chronic Disease
As a physician, Dr. Foran was taught that chronic illnesses are progressive and lifelong. Diet was barely discussed in medical training. Now, after seeing her own healing, she believes many modern conditions are rooted in metabolic dysfunction—especially chronically elevated insulin.
That’s not something most of us were taught.
And yet, we’re watching people reverse symptoms of colitis, IBS, diabetes, obesity, and even depression by changing what’s on their plate.
If You’re Desperate for Relief
Most people don’t wake up one morning excited to give up bread and vegetables. We come to this way of eating because we’re tired of suffering.
Dr. Foran didn’t stumble into this casually. She was facing surgery. If you’re in that place—discouraged, inflamed, exhausted—I want you to know there’s another option to explore.
