When I look back at the early days of zero carb, one thing stands out more than anything else: how simple—and how powerful—it all was. In this episode, I’m sharing how the carnivore community has evolved since 2009, what’s changed along the way, and what I really hope we don’t lose.

The Simplicity That Changed My Life

Back in 2009, we didn’t have carnivore recipes, supplements, or debates about electrolytes and macros. The advice was incredibly straightforward: eat fatty red meat, drink water, and go live your life.

That was it.

No tracking. No hacks. No trying to recreate bread or desserts. It worked beautifully.

We weren’t obsessing over the scale. We were watching our bodies heal. People were seeing their joint pain disappear, their digestion improve, their mood lift. After years of dieting and restriction, this way of eating felt like freedom, because it was.

A Very Different Kind of Community

The tone back then was direct. No one was sugarcoating anything. If you were struggling, the answer was usually, “eat more meat and trust the process.”

And while that might sound a little harsh today, it came from a place of deep belief in how powerful proper nourishment can be.

We also had a strong “no meat shaming” culture. No one was telling you that you needed grass-finished beef or fancy products. Beef was the foundation—simple, affordable, and effective.

Today: More Tools, More Noise

Fast forward to today, and things look very different.

These days we’ve got carnivore breads, desserts, powders, fasting protocols, macro tracking—you name it. And while some of these tools can be helpful, they can also make things feel a lot more complicated than they need to be.

What I’ve learned over time is this: people are different.

Some people do better with higher fat, others don’t. Some thrive with dairy, others don’t. Some benefit from fasting, while others truly need to focus on consistent nourishment to heal. That matters a lot.

Let’s Not Lose What Works

At the end of the day, the foundation hasn’t changed. We eat meat. We nourish our bodies. We give ourselves time to heal.

Yes, we can personalize things now in ways we didn’t before—but we don’t need to lose the simplicity that made this so powerful in the first place.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, come back to the basics. A steak on a plate can still change your life.
